Fan’s ‘Toronto Stronger’ sign angers many on Twitter

There are some people in the world who just don’t get it. In their desire to be clever, they don’t look at the big picture. The Toronto Maple Leafs have one such fan.

Several hundred Maple Leafs fans gathered at Maple Leaf Square outside the Leafs’ home arena Monday night as their favorite team took on the Boston Bruins in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.

Most fans were wearing Maple Leafs jerseys and carrying handmade signs supporting their team. But one sign stood out in particular: a sign that said “Toronto Stronger,” a play on words off the “Boston Strong” motto that has been used in Boston as a rallying cry after the Boston Marathon bombings.

Several people took photos of the sign and posted it on Twitter and the phrase “Toronto Stronger” was the No. 1 trending topic in the U.S. for a while Monday night, with most comments heavily criticizing the misguided but still unidentified fan.

Will the mystery fan be brave enough to show up with the same sign for Game 4 of the series on Wednesday? Does he even realize the outrage his sign caused? Time will tell.

Oh, Toronto lost the game, 5-2, and trail the series, 2-1.
