Fans petition President Obama: Make the Jaguars sign Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow fans are making a plea for their favorite quarterback to be signed by and start for the Jacksonville Jaguars ... and they’re taking it straight to the top.

Forget about General Manager David Caldwell, who has said time and again he has no intention of bringing in Tebow despite the former Florida quarterback’s popularity in the area.

And team owner Shad Khan apparently is useless to these people. He knew of Caldwell’s plan to stay away from Tebow ... and hired the guy anyway!

No, no. A matter of this magnitude requires someone with real authority: the president of the United States.

That’s right. A petition has been started on the White House’s “We the People” website, pleading with President Obama to “Call NFL Jacksonville Jaguars GM David Caldwell and tell him to stop ignoring the Jaguars fans and sign Tim Tebow!”

Sure, the president may have a few other matters on his plate right now, but how can he ignore such an argument as: “If the Jaguars sign & START Tebow, home games will be sold out, sales will spike, the team will win and the fans will be happy.”

Come on, Mr. President. Don’t you want Jaguar fans to be happy?

At this moment, the petition has 329 signatures -- far below the 100,000 required by May 30 for an official response from the White House (and also way behind the 4,600-plus people who want the U.S. to merge with Australia to form Ameristralia).

But if the Tebow supporters are looking for any moral victories (not to be confused with all the real ones he led the Denver Broncos to in 2011), they can take comfort in knowing that their petition will soon have more signatures than the one looking for Mister Rogers’ birthday to become a national holiday, as well as the one demanding that President Obama attend a professional ultimate Frisbee game.

[Updated at 12:13 p.m.: The Tebow petition disappeared from the “We the People” site soon after this blog was posted. The Times called the contact number listed on the site to find out why and was transferred to voicemail. We left a message but have not received a response.
