Robbie Keane named Galaxy MVP for second year in a row

Robbie Keane was named the Galaxy’s Most Valuable Player on Tuesday while Omar Gonzalez was selected Defender of the Year and Sean Franklin was given the team’s Humanitarian of the Year prize for his tireless work in the community.

Keane, one of three finalists for Major League Soccer’s MVP award, was named the team’s top player for the second year in a row after a season in which he had a team-high 16 goals and 11 assists in 23 games.

He is just the third player in franchise history to win consecutive team MVP awards after Landon Donovan (2008-09) and Kevin Hartman (2003-04).

Gonzalez, a mainstay of the U.S. national team in central defense, was named the Galaxy’s top defender for the third team in four seasons. He started 27 games for the Galaxy, helping the team to 10 shutouts.

Franklin, the Cal State Northridge alum who has deep ties in Southern California, was honored for his work with numerous community groups including the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He has also volunteered with the Union Rescue Mission, the L.A. Regional Food Bank and the Ryan Rossi Central America Orphanage Society, among other groups.

Franklin won the Galaxy’s humanitarian prize in 2011 as well.
