Dodgers claim outfielder Daniel Fields from Milwaukee Brewers

The Dodgers were busy Monday at baseball’s winter meetings, just not quite the way it was advertised.

With still no announcement on whether the separate deals for reliever Aroldis Chapman and starter Hisashi Iwakuma were going to happen, the Dodgers did announce their second waiver claim of the day.

The Dodgers claimed minor league outfielder Daniel Fields from the Milwaukee Brewers, pushing to 38 the number of players on the 40-man roster.

The new front office of Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi demonstrated last off-season, their first with the Dodgers, that minor league players picked up in December are often no longer around by the time camp opens, but for now Fields is a Dodger.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Detroit Tigers, Fields is a versatile type, with some speed but modest power. Fields, 24, has a .244/.329/.370 slash line in six minor league seasons, with 46 home runs and 86 stolen bases.

He made his major league debut last season with the Brewers, with one hit in three at-bats. He spent the rest of the season at triple-A Toledo, putting together a .228/.335/.367 line with seven home runs and 17 steals in 526 plate appearances.

Earlier, the Dodgers claimed right-hander Danny Reynolds from the Angels.
