Reports: Dodgers to acquire Aroldis Chapman from Reds
reporting from NASHVILLE — The Dodgers have an agreement in place to acquire Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds, according to multiple reports.
Pending the review of medical records, the Dodgers will send two prospects to the Reds in exchange, Fox Sports and CBS Sports reported Monday morning.
However, one person familiar with the details of the negotations told The Times the agreement is “not done.”
“Not just medicals,” the person said.
If the deal happens and provided the Dodgers don’t trade incumbent closer Kenley Jansen, they figure to have the most dynamic eighth- and ninth-inning combinations in baseball.
Armed with a fastball that frequently touches 100 mph, Chapman had 116 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings this year, an average of 15.7 every nine innings. He saved 33 games.
The acquisition of Chapman, however, could create some discord in the clubhouse. Jansen is known to pride himself as being the team’s closer.
For Jansen, there could also be financial implications, as Jansen is in line to become a free agent at the end of the upcoming season. Moving into a closer’s role in his walk year could potentially affect his value on the free-agent market.
Chapman, 27, is also on track to become a free agent next winter.
