Ex-Green Bay Packer Mike Wahle lists La Jolla home with converted bomb shelter

Retired NFL guard Mike Wahle, who spent nearly a decade protecting Brett Favre as a fixture on the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line, has listed a La Jolla home capable of offering premium wine protection.

On the market for $6.895 million, the ocean-view home in Lower Hermosa includes a 1950s bomb shelter that has been converted into a 1,600-bottle wine cellar and tasting room.

The repurposed Cold War relic is one of many updates made to the Spanish Colonial-style home. Built in the early 1900s and renovated in 2009, the house features such details as distressed black walnut floors, a wall aquarium, an elevator and a grand foyer set beneath a hand-blown glass chandelier.

Two levels of living include large formal areas, a family room, a wet bar, an open-area kitchen, five bedrooms and eight bathrooms in 5,100 square feet. Curving walls of glass take in panoramic ocean views.

Outside, terraced grounds contain a large patio and a play area. The street-level garage has a car lift that lowers to a subterranean basement.

Wahle, 38, played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Packers, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, making one Pro Bowl in 2005. Following his retirement, he founded the social platform Crowd Cam, a social media aggregator for professional athletes, sports teams and events.
