After first snow blasts the Sierra, one ski resort plans to open on Halloween
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe in Nevada plans to be the first California-Nevada ski resort to open for the season. After 7 to 18 inches of snow fell in the first storm of the season, the resort 25 miles south of Reno announced Tuesday that it plans to open Oct. 31.
The resort has a base elevation of more than 8,000 feet, the highest in the Lake Tahoe area. Mt. Rose will start making snow, which will continue until the opening, the announcement says.
Last year Mr. Rose opened Nov. 4 and remained open until early May, one of its longest seasons ever.
Spokesman Tim LeRoy at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., reports in an email Monday:
“Winter came in like a hurricane, literally. Winds are currently gusting in excess of 100 mph at the summit, which makes measurement difficult but there’s at least 1-2 feet up top with 4-6” at main lodge.” (“Up top” refers to the 11,035-foot summit.)
Mammoth plans to open Nov. 10.
