European Tour CEO apologizes for using term ‘colored’ in interview
George O’Grady, the CEO of the European golf tour, apologized Thursday for using the term “colored” during a live television interview about the feud between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia.
“I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live interview for Sky Sports, for which I unreservedly apologize,” O’Grady said.
O’Grady was apologizing for a remark he made earlier Thursday, when he was asked about Garcia’s “fried chicken” comment.
“We know the connotation in the United States,” O’Grady said. “We accept all races on the European Tour, we take it very strongly. Most of Sergio’s friends happen to be very, er, are colored athletes in the United States.”
Garcia had made a comment on Tuesday in which, after being asked if he would have Woods over for dinner during next month’s U.S. Open, said, “We’ll have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken.”
Garcia later apologized for that remark.
