Watch Galaxy’s Jose Villarreal score with a bicycle kick [Video]
Jose Villarreal, one of the Galaxy’s bright young soccer stars, has joined an illustrious group with his bicycle-kick goal Saturday in stoppage time.
Did you see the play that made all the highlight shows? Including No. 1 on a certain sports juggernaut? Move over Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and the recently departed David Beckham.
Villarreal, the 19-year-old from Inglewood, came in as a substitute against Toronto FC and netted the equalizer in the 92nd minute of a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
You can see the play in the video below. Villarreal volleyed a bicycle kick past Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik after defender Omar Gonzalez sent a deep cross that forward Mike Magee headed back to the middle of the penalty area.
“It was a cross from Omar, I don’t know if Mike or the defender put it back in the box or something like that, and it was just a reaction play by me,” Villarreal said. “I’m just happy I can help out the team.”
Coach Bruce Arena was a little more emphatic about the effort.
“It was a great goal and he’s good in the penalty area as demonstrated by his goal,” Arena said. “He’s a good young player; we need a little more consistency out of him.”
