Terrell Suggs says Roger Goodell ‘had a hand in’ Super Bowl blackout

Turns out Roger Goodell is the evil mastermind behind the blackout at the Super Dome that caused a 34-minute delay in Super Bowl XLVII in February.

So implies Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs in an interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters as part of its “E:60” magazine series.

“I thought he had a hand in it,” Suggs said of the NFL commissioner. “Most definitely, he had a hand in it.”

The Ravens had pulled to a 28-6 lead over the San Francisco 49ers early in the third quarter when the power outage occurred, causing the unprecedented delay. When play resumed, there was a definite momentum switch on the field, with the 49ers running off 17 unanswered points before the Ravens finally put them away for a 34-31 victory.

The incident was later blamed on an abnormality in the electrical system, but Suggs has his own theory.

“It was just like, ahh, ol’ Roger Goodell, he never stops,” Suggs said. “He always got something up his sleeve. He just couldn’t let us have this one in a landslide, huh?”

Suggs also mentions the Ravens game against Denver in the divisional round of the playoffs, saying he saw Goodell socializing with Broncos owner John Elway on the sideline before the game.

“You’re the commissioner of this league and you’re supposed to make sure everything is being played on an even playing field,” Suggs said of Goodell. “I definitely don’t think he’s doing a good job, and I don’t think he should be making 10 million a year. That’s just my personal opinion.”

Suggs’ former Baltimore teammate Ray Lewis also suggested the league had something to do with the power outage in his comments for the Ravens’ documentary “America’s Game.”

“You cannot tell me somebody wasn’t sitting there and when they say, ‘The Ravens [are] about to blow them out. Man, we better do something,’” Lewis said.
