Watch disabled basketball player score with help from opponent

It’s easy to write about all the negative things in sports, but it’s great to write about something positive. Like Mitchell Marcus.

Marcus is the team manager for Coronado High’s boys’ basketball team in El Paso. He has a developmental disability, but helps the team in practice and cheers its members on from the bench during every game.

Before Coronado’s last game of the season, the coach came up with a plan: No matter what the score was, he was going to play Marcus in the last two minutes of the game.

And that’s just what happened. With Coronado leading by 10 points, Marcus came into the game to the cheers of the crowd, which began chanting his name.

Marcus’ teammates tried to set him up to score two points, but each time Marcus missed. With just seconds left, Coronado’s opponent, Franklin High, was preparing to inbound the ball to run out the clock in Coronado’s victory.

But Jonathon Montanez, who was inbounding the ball for Franklin, had another idea. He called out Marcus’ name and inbounded the ball to him under the basket. Marcus turned, shot and scored as time ran out. The crowd rushed the court and carried Marcus off like a hero. You can watch it all in the video above.

“I think I’ll cry about it for the rest of my life,” Marcus’ mom said.

Sure, there will be people who say that setting him up to score in such a way is meaningless. But look at the joy of the crowd. Listen to them chant his name. Every good person deserves a moment like that in his or her life. Mitchell Marcus got his. Stand up and applaud.
