San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval had one of the greatest performances in World Series history Wednesday when he hit three home runs to power the Giants to an 8-3 Game 1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

In the first inning, Sandoval hit an 0-2 fastball by Tigers starter Justin Verlander into the front row over the center-field wall.

In the third inning, again off Verlander, Sandoval hit a 2-0 pitch into the front row of the left-field bleachers.

Sandoval capped his day by hitting a solo homer deep to center off of Al Albuquerque in the fifth inning.

With the crowd on its feet, hoping for a fourth homer, Sandoval merely singled in the seventh inning.

“We were hoping for a water shot but he got a lousy single. Kind of killed the whole deal for us,” Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt said, laughing.

Sandoval became the fourth player to hit three homers in one World Series game, joining Albert Pujols, Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth, who did it twice.

“Man, I still can’t believe it,” Sandoval said.
