Today’s starting lineups
The starting lineups for today’s Dodgers-Braves game.
Dustin May out until at least after the All-Star break after being put on 60-day IL
ATLANTA — The Dodgers won’t see Dustin May on a big league mound again until at least after the All-Star break.
That became official Tuesday, when the team transferred the pitcher to the 60-day injured list with his forearm strain in order to make room on the 40-man roster for their debuting Tuesday starter, Bobby Miller.
While May was initially expected to be out five to seven weeks, the delay to his timeline doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The right-hander will be shutdown for at least the next several weeks after suffering a flexor pronator strain last Wednesday, an injury that was expected to require a platelet-rich plasma injection to recover.
In the meantime, the Dodgers will turn to Gavin Stone to fill May’s void in the rotation. He gave up five runs in four-plus innings Monday night, but showed encouraging signs by bouncing back from a four-run first inning.
Miller was called up to replace Julio Urías, who went on the 15-day injured list this past weekend with a hamstring strain. After experiencing some initial bruising around the area, Urías said he has been feeling better in recent days and will throw a bullpen session on either Friday or Saturday in Tampa Bay (he also played light catch on Tuesday at Truist Park).
If all goes well, Urías could return as soon as next month’s home series against the New York Yankees.
Marcell Ozuna responds to Will Smith’s complaint about back swing
ATLANTA — A night after Dodgers catcher Will Smith complained about Braves designated hitter Marcell Ozuna’s elongated back swing, one that hit Smith in the head on Monday and sparked an argument between the two at home plate, Ozuna offered his take on the situation before Tuesday’s game.
Ozuna confirmed to the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Smith told him to “clean up” his swing, but that he wasn’t intending to hurt someone. He also suggested Smith could back up when he hits.
Those quotes come in contrast to Smith’s postgame complaints about Ozuna on Monday, when he noted he isn’t the only catcher who has caught a stray swing from Ozuna behind the plate.
“He hit me in the head with his bat pretty hard,” Smith said. “It’s not the first time he’s done it to me. He’s done it to other catchers around the league. I just felt like there comes a point where I need to say something there. In the moment, it kind of got a little heated. It’s something he’s not doing on purpose. But you do it enough times you’d think he’d fix it.”
Smith said he particularly sensitive to Monday’s sequence because he recently returned from a concussion.
Asked if Ozuna apologied to him, Smith shook his head.
“The catcher is the one back there, he’s the one getting hit,” Smith said. “It’s my job and I’m the one wearing it. Hopefully I wake up tomorrow feeling good. Should feel good. So, yeah.”
Despite circumstances, Dodgers believe ‘this is the right time’ for Bobby Miller’s debut
ATLANTA — This certainly isn’t what the Dodgers had in mind for Bobby Miller’s big-league debut.
The club’s top pitching prospect has only eight career triple A outings, including just four this season after starting his season late. His stuff is still somewhat a work in progress, too, trying to find the right complement of secondary pitches to pair with his near-triple-digit fastball.
As recently as last Thursday, as the Dodgers looked for a replacement for the injured Dustin May, manager Dave Roberts even indicated the 24-year-old right-hander wasn’t quite yet an option for a call up to the majors.
Monday recap: Freddie Freeman, J.D. Martinez rally Dodgers past Braves
ATLANTA — The first inning couldn’t have gone much worse for the Dodgers on Monday night.
Rookie center fielder James Outman misplayed a fly ball on a leadoff double, leading to one run. Rookie right-hander Gavin Stone, called up for the second big league start of his career, yielded a three-run home run a few batters later.
By the time the side was retired, the first-place Atlanta Braves had sent nine batters to the plate, forced Stone to throw 34 pitches and surged out to an early four-run lead — one that felt close to insurmountable in front of a sold-out Truist Park.
“After that first inning,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “there was a lot of stress.”
