Good morning, and welcome to the TimesOC newsletter. It’s Friday, Dec. 18.

My name is David Carrillo Peñaloza, the author of the TimesOC newsletter and an editor for Los Angeles Times Community News.

Orange County received the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, with much fanfare.

Healthcare workers at UCI Medical Center and Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange became some of the first in the county to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Each inoculation was greeted with a round of applause.

Other county hospitals, including Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach and Irvine and Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo, administered the vaccine to healthcare workers on Thursday.

With the coronavirus soaring in Orange County, another 2,615 cases and 13 deaths reported Thursday, the vaccine is desperately needed.

“Frankly, I’m very relieved that the vaccine is here and that we now have an opportunity in the first place to protect critical healthcare personnel to take care of the community,” Dr. Michael Hurwitz, the chief of staff at Hoag, told reporter Lilly Nguyen. “I’m looking forward for people to be vaccinated, protect themselves so that we can get back to life as it was before the pandemic.”
