LAPD seeks witnesses in three South L.A. fatal shootings
Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department are searching for people who may have witnessed three fatal shootings that occurred in South Los Angeles over the weekend.
Although crime and homicides are down citywide, a spate of violence left three people dead from Friday to Monday, when there were 14 shootings and 11 people hit by gunfire, said Capt. Robert Arcos of the 77thStreet Division, which encompasses 12 square miles in South L.A.
The first fatal shooting occurred Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Bonsallo Avenue, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling of the 77thStreet Division.
Lionel Douglas, 36, was riding his bike when a person driving a light-colored SUV pulled up and shot him, Barling said.
On June 2, at 7:27 p.m., Samuel Burge, 21, was walking in the 1000 block of West 74th Street when he was shot. A suspect ran east into a dark-colored vehicle and fled, Barling said.
At 8:05 p.m. that night, neighbors in the 3100 block of West 59thStreet heard an argument and multiple shots. Detectives believe that Charles Westby, 23, was killed while standing in the rear of an apartment building. Westby is believed to be an acquaintance of the suspect, Barling said.
Arcos said the shootings are unrelated, but detectives are seeking additional information about each incident. Anyone with information can call the Criminal Gang Homicide unit at (213) 485-1383 or anonymously phone in a tip at (877) LAPD-24-7.
“We want to bubble it, shut it down, put out the fires before they spread,” Barling said.
