Mass shooting in South L.A. leaves five women and a man wounded; three suspects at large
Six people were shot in South Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, all of whom appear to have been unintended targets, authorities say. Police are searching for three suspects who fled the scene after the gunfire.
Around 3:15 p.m., three male suspects drove up to the intersection of 74th and Figueroa streets and opened fire, striking the six victims, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Five of the victims were women, four of whom are between the ages of 39 and 63, and one was a 36-year-old man, LAPD reported. The age of one of the female victims was not known. All were on foot when they were shot.
The victims were transported to a local hospital, and while the Los Angeles Fire Department initially said one was in critical condition, by late Wednesday LAPD officials said all were listed as stable.
“We don’t believe they were the intended targets” in the shooting, LAPD Detective Dean Vinluan told KTLA. “They probably just got caught up in the crossfire.”
He said detectives were looking into the shooting’s possible connection to gang violence, but that link has not been confirmed. The shooting occurred near a homeless encampment, but LAPD officials said it doesn’t appear the shooting was related to homelessness in any way.
The Los Angeles Police Department says the four victims were shot as they were crossing the street.
The suspects’ vehicle was a four-door Chevy with black rims that was last seen heading south on Flower Street at 74th Street, LAPD Public Information Officer Tony Im said.
One suspect was wearing a black hoodie, the second was wearing a blue hoodie, and the third was wearing a gray hoodie, Im said.
