Man who barricaded himself in a Little Tokyo store with a weapon is taken into custody, officials say

Los Angeles police used gas and a beanbag device to end an hours-long standoff with a knife-wielding man who had barricaded himself inside a Little Tokyo store, authorities said Monday.

The man was taken to a local hospital for self-inflicted injuries. Once he has been treated, he will be booked for assault with a deadly weapon, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. A. Walker.

The man entered the gift or novelty store at the Japanese Village Plaza near 2nd and San Pedro streets shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.

The man threatened at least one person and may have threatened to harm himself, startling customers and employees who evacuated and left the man alone inside, police said. He was holding a weapon which was not believed to be a firearm.

Police tried a number of devices to end the standoff, authorities said.

“They used gas, and that didn’t work,” Walker said. “Then they used a beanbag device.”

The man was taken into custody around 1:40 a.m. Besides his self-inflicted wounds, no other injuries were reported.
