FOR THE RECORD

10:57 a.m.: This post is incorrect, with the USGS reporting that sensors in California misidentified seismic activity from a magnitude 6.7 quake that struck off the coast of Alaska five minutes earlier. “There was a ghost in the machine,” said Don Drysdale, spokesman for the California Geological Survey. “It’s possible that one of the sensors here pulled in one of the early waves from that and projected it as a local earthquake.”
