Iggy Azalea and Nick Young break up: I’ve tried to rebuild my trust in him, she says, but I can’t
Rapper Iggy Azalea and the L.A. Lakers’ Nick Young have ended their engagement.
“Unfortunately although I love Nick and have tried and tried to rebuild my trust in him - It's become apparent in the last few weeks I am unable to,” the “Fancy” rapper, 26, said Sunday on Instagram.
The breakup announcement was timed well to coincide with the start of the NBA's Game 7 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, when one might presume that most basketball fans would be otherwise occupied.
Young was more succinct in his notice, which was posted around the same time as hers: “Single,” he tweeted.
The couple, who got engaged in June 2015 when he gave her a big rock during his 30th birthday party, had been on the relationship rocks since a video went viral in March in which he was talking to teammate D'Angelo Russell about meeting up with a 19-year-old woman last summer after clubbing.
Awkward tidbit: The video was reportedly shot by Russell right around the time of the engagement.
The couple started dating in November 2013 and bought Selena Gomez’s Tarzana house for $3.45 million a year later. Unrelated to the video, they'd previously put off their planned late-2016 wedding until the end of the basketball season in 2017 due to her touring schedule.
Incidentally, Young's relationship with Azalea wasn't the only one tested by the leak of Russell's video: The 20-year-old rookie got booed by Lakers fans as he took the court after the scandal broke. There was reportedly tension in the locker room, with Russell apologizing to his teammates as some of them spoke publicly about the Bro Code breach.
"It's just unfortunate, man. It's tough," Lakers elder statesman Kobe Bryant said at the time. "I'm sure he'll evolve. I'm sure [Russell] will grow and I'm sure he'll be better from it. I don't think there's much he can do about it outside of the countless apologies.”
In April, Young was quizzed by TMZ about the odds of the Lakers winning the 2016 NBA Championship as well as the odds of him marrying Azalea.
“I got a better chance -- I don't know, both of 'em's good," Young told a cameraman.
Los Angeles, of course, didn't even make the playoffs.
