Benedict Cumberbatch marries Sophie Hunter on Valentine’s Day
Benedict Cumberbatch is officially off the market: The star of “Sherlock” and “The Imitation Game” has married Sophie Hunter.
That primal scream you might have heard on Valentine’s Day likely belonged to the legions of Cumberbuddies and Cumberbitches all over the world.
The English star and Hunter, an actress and theater director, tied the knot on Saturday on the Isle of Wight, just off Britain’s southern coast, his rep confirmed to the Los Angeles Times on Monday.
“Benedict and Sophie were married yesterday surrounded by their close friends and family. It was a truly magical day,” the rep said in a statement.
The ceremony reportedly took place at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in the town of Mottistone, and was followed by a reception at Mottistone Manor, E! News said.
Celebrity guests included Cumberbatch’s “War Horse” costar Tom Hiddleston and “Sherlock” costar Martin Freeman. The Daily Mail reported that Hiddleston, of “The Avengers” fame, served as best man; however, Cumberbatch’s rep said he did not. (Still, here’s hoping someone had the good sense to Cumberbomb the wedding photos!)
Cumberbatch, 38, who’s up for a lead actor Oscar this Sunday for his role as World War II mathematician Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” met Hunter, 36, when they appeared in 2009’s “Burlesque Fairytales,” the BBC reported.
They announced their engagement in November with a traditional newspaper listing in the Times of London rather than going the on-trend route of social-media posting. In January, the couple confirmed that Hunter is pregnant with their first child.
