Adele cries over her own music when it’s good; opens up about son and boyfriend
Adele totally gets it if you tear up during her emotional ballads, because she’s prone to do the same.
The British singer-songwriter, who blasted back onto the scene this month with her powerhouse hit “Hello,” opened up to the New York Times about her method, particularly what it takes for her to write a really good song.
“In order for me to feel confident with one of my songs it has to really move me,” the singer said. “That’s how I know that I’ve written a good song for myself — it’s when I start crying. It’s when I just break out in ... tears in the vocal booth or in the studio, and I’ll need a moment to myself.”

After the rampant success of her second album, “21,” many, including Adele, wondered if lightning could strike twice with her upcoming record, “25,” due Nov. 20.
“I didn’t think I had it in me to write another record. I didn’t know if I should. Because of how successful ‘21’ was, I thought, ‘Maybe everyone’s happy with that being the last thing from me. Maybe I should bow out on a high,’” the 27-year-old said. “As time went on, I realized I had no choice. I have to write more music for myself, and there’s nothing else I want to do.”
The Grammy and Oscar winner said she was miserable while writing “21” and would never want to feel that loneliness and bitterness again. She was also single at the time, and not yet a parent.
In October 2012, she welcomed son Angelo with boyfriend Simon Konecki, an investment banker-turned-philanthropist. And now Angelo is what keeps her from going back to that dark place, even though it’s where she created amazing work.
“I haven’t got time to fall apart,” she said. “I’m the backbone for my kid, and I want to be there for him. And I want to be there for my boyfriend as well, and I don’t want to bring them down with me for my art.”
Adele also opened up about her family life and her relationship with Konecki in a lengthy interview published this month in Rolling Stone.
“He’s so supportive,” she told the magazine. “And that takes a very big man, because I’m very successful at what I do. My last boyfriend was uncomfortable with how successful I was and the fact that he had to share me with lots of people.”
She and Konecki met as “21” was gaining mainstream attention and are still together as boyfriend and girlfriend, she said, despite reports of marriage and breakups.
“We just haven’t felt the need to get married. We’ve got a kid together. I feel like that’s a big enough commitment,” she told Rolling Stone.
The “Skyfall” singer also said her pregnancy came at a perfect time, because she was starting to “get a bit afraid of everything,” and Angelo took away that fear.
“When I had him, it made everything all right, and I trusted everything because the world had given me this miracle, you know, so I became a bit of a hippie, an Earth mother.”
“He’s a little angel,” she continued. “All the things I really like about myself, he brings out in me, and he’s the only person that tells me no. He completely rules me. He’s the boss of me, and it’s so funny for other people to watch, because I’m the boss of everything in my work life.”
