Grammys 2014: Hat attack at the Grammys

Judging from the pre-Grammys red carpet so far, headgear is having a moment this evening, and we’re not talking Daft Punks’ trademark metallic helmets either. Pharrell Williams stopped to chat with Ryan Seacrest wearing a super-casual red track jacket, a T-shirt and casual pants with a keychain swinging from his belt buckle — but accessorized with an outsized hat with a tall dimpled crown that was so striking it had the Twittersphere comparing it to Smokey Bear’s iconic ranger’s hat.

Williams was actually sporting the same lid (or one very, very similar) at last night’s pre-Grammy event at the Beverly Hilton, pairing it with a sharp-looking Lanvin ensemble (loved the petrol blue silk bow tie), and it looks an awful lot like some of the hats we’ve seen on Lanvin’s runway in recent seasons.

Then there were the mother/son pairings — Madonna and son David kitted out in matching Ralph Lauren outfits with Madonna wearing a wide-brimmed hat and David a black fedora, and Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon in matching low-profile toppers.

Gavin DeGraw took his strut down the red carpet in an all-black John Varvatos ensemble — topped off with a quilted leather stingy brim fedora. And we wouldn’t expect anything less than a black cowboy hat from country crooner Willie Nelson, who also managed to trend in the hairstyle department — his long braids adding a Girl Scout troop’s worth of twisted and tied-off locks.

And then there’s the host of the whole shebang — LL Cool J — who accessorized his tuxedo with one of the black Kangol driving caps he’s known for.

Hats off to the Grammy-goers who, for one night anyway, seem to have turned Staples Center into Lidsville.
