China box office: ‘Warcraft’ crosses $200 million, could become top import of 2016
“Warcraft,” the video game-inspired film from Legendary Pictures, sailed across the $200 million mark in China last week after 12 days in theaters, giving it a shot at becoming the top-grossing imported film of 2016.
The movie, which took in $48.7 million in the seven days ending Sunday, has earned $206.7 million since its June 8 release, and could challenge Disney’s “Zootopia” for the foreign film crown of 2016. “Zootopia” is the best-selling import of the year so far, with a gross of $235.4 million, according to film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway. “Warcraft” has made about $377 million worldwide.

Disney, which is having a stellar year at Chinese cinemas and just opened its Shanghai Disney theme park last week, claimed the No. 2 spot at the box office last week as Pixar’s “Finding Dory” opened Friday and earned $18.2 million in its first three days in theaters.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” added $15.7 million to its tally, good enough for third place last week. The movie has now earned $110.4 million in China since June 3 – about as much as the last film in the popular series.
Rounding out the top five box office slots were Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” which has earned $58.7 million in China – compared with $69 million in the U.S. and Canada – and the local production “Warrior Vs. Dragon” from Enlight Pictures, which sold $1.5 million in tickets.
