New ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ ‘Kinky Boots’ coming to Pantages
The new production of “The Phantom of the Opera” and the national tour of the Cyndi Lauper musical “Kinky Boots” will be part of the Pantages Theatre’s 2014-15 season, organizers announced on Monday.
The season will also include touring versions of the recent Broadway productions of “Pippin” and “Motown the Musical,” as well as the return of perennial favorites “Jersey Boys” and “Wicked.” As previously announced, the national tour of Disney’s “Newsies” will also be part of the season.
In all, there will be a total of seven productions for the 2014-15 season. The schedule will kick off with “Jersey Boys” (Oct. 1-19). The musical about the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons originated at the La Jolla Playhouse and opened on Broadway in 2005.
Clint Eastwood’s big-screen version of the musical is scheduled to open in cinemas June 20.
“Pippin” (Oct. 21 to Nov. 9) is a revival production of Stephen Schwartz’s 1972 musical. Diane Paulus directed the revival at the American Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts, before transferring to Broadway. The production won the Tony Award for revival of a musical this year.
“Kinky Boots” (Nov. 11-30) will come to L.A. for the first time as part of the national tour. Lauper wrote the songs for the musical, which is based on the 2005 British movie about a drag queen who saves a shoe factory.
The show, which is still running on Broadway, won six Tony Awards, including new musical.
“Motown the Musical” (April 28-June 7, 2015) is a jukebox-musical production that opened last year on Broadway. The show features popular Motown songs made famous by Diana Ross, The Miracles and The Jackson Five.
“The Phantom of the Opera” (June 10-26, 2015) is a new production of the musical favorite directed by Laurence Connor. The production has toured Britain and recently kicked off its U.S. tour.
Rounding out the season are “Wicked” (Dec. 10, 2014-Feb. 1, 2015) and “Newsies” (March 24-April 19, 2015).
