Barbie doll creator’s onetime Malibu home among L.A.’s priciest sales

The homes of a former Lakers coach, a Hollywood talent manager and a late toy mogul were among the top residential real estate sales in the greater Los Angeles area last week.

$19.5 million -- Beverly Hills

A newly built, 6,830-square-foot showplace in the Trousdale area of Beverly Hills sold for $19.5 million, or $2,855 a square foot.

Listed in May for $19.9 million, the contemporary-style home sits on about half an acre in the 1800 block of Carla Ridge with an infinity-edge swimming pool, telescoping walls of glass and city and ocean views. Open-space interiors include formal living/dining rooms, a glass-enclosed wine cellar, a gym/office, five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms.

$9.98 million -- Malibu

In the 23000 block of Malibu Colony Road, a home owned by the estate of Mattel co-founder Elliot Handler and his wife, businesswoman and toy inventor Ruth Handler, sold in a little over a month for $9.8 million.

Elliot Handler, who died in 2011 at 95, began Mattel with his wife and a short-term partner in 1945. Ruth Handler, creator of the iconic Barbie doll, passed away in 2002 at 85.

Built in 1949, the oceanfront home has a living room with a wall fireplace, an eat-in kitchen, a sun room, five bedrooms and four bathrooms in 4,225 square feet. The master suite, an oversized terrace and a large deck take in panoramic ocean views.

Chad Rogers of Hilton & Hyland, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, represented both sides of the transaction.

$9,625,570 -- Brentwood

NBCUniversal Chief Executive Steve Burke and his wife, Gretchen, sold their Traditional-style home in the 500 block of Moreno Avenue for slightly under the asking price of $9.625 million.

Drawing from New England style, interiors feature sawed oak floors, vaulted ceilings, a mud room, formal living and dining rooms, six bedrooms and six bathrooms in 8,120 square feet. A lower basement level holds a gym, a screening room, a wet bar and a wine room.

French doors open to a covered patio with a fire pit, a built-in barbecue and a swimming pool with a spa.

David Offer of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties had the listing. Michelle Schwartz of the Agency represented the buyer.

$9.5 million -- Hollywood Hills West

Scooter Braun, talent manager for such entertainers as Justin Bieber and the Black Eyed Peas, sold his 5,300-square-foot home in the 9000 block of St. Ives Drive to film producer and speculative real estate developer Nile Niami for $9.5 million.

The contemporary-style home above the Sunset Strip is highlighted by a koi pond entry, double-height interiors, walls of floor-to-ceiling glass and a theater room. A second-level lounge and adjacent office take in views of the swimming pool and the cityscape.

Darlene Hutton and Jaisa Bishop of Partners Trust in Brentwood were the listing agents. Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland represented Niami.

$9.5 million -- Manhattan Beach

Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni sold his home in the 100 block of 25th Street for $9.5 million — $2.6 million more than he paid for the house in 2013.

The three-story home on a walk street has European beechwood floors, a game room, a private elevator and a 2,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room. A terrace set off the kitchen takes in panoramic ocean views. There are five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in 5,000 square feet of space.

$8.13 million -- Palos Verdes Estates

In the 1500 block of Via Zurita, an ocean-view home on nearly three quarters of an acre sold for $620,000 less than the listing price of $8.75 million.

Built in Mediterranean style in 2005, the 9,680-square-foot home features a double-height foyer with a sweeping staircase that opens to formal living and dining rooms. Other living areas include a billiards room, a man cave with a wet bar and a master suite with his and hers bathrooms, a soaking tub and a private balcony.

Tiered grounds contain a swimming pool with a spa and a large expanse of grass, set off by ocean views.

$7.425 million -- Rancho Palos Verdes

A modern oceanfront residence designed by noted architect Marshall Lewis sold for $7.425 million -- about $2 million more than what it sold for three years ago.

Set on a bluff of more than an acre in the 90 block of Marguerite Drive, the 7,800-square-foot home was built in 1991 and is distinguished by a geometric design underscored by black brickwork. Vaulted ceilings, open-space living areas, a recreation room and a 2,200-bottle wine cellar are among the features.

Outdoors, landscaped grounds with a Koi pond take in unobstructed ocean views.

Kim Hall and Stephen Haw of RE/MAX Estate properties had the listing. Mingli Wang of Keller Williams Realty represented the buyer.

$7.275 million -- Beverly Hills

Marketed as a development opportunity, a Trousdale estate in the 500 block of Arkell Drive sold in a day for $7.275 million. It previously sold for $5.075 million in 2013.

Grounds of about half an acre currently contain a 1960s home with four bedrooms in 4,200 square feet and a swimming pool.

Jeeb O’Reilly and Tori Barnao of Douglas Elliman handled both ends of the transaction.

These are among the top residential real estate sales reported on the combined L.A./Westside Multiple Listing Service for the period beginning July 5 and ending July 11.
