Standouts among 2013 Homes of the Week

A host of noteworthy homes were on the Southern California real estate market in 2013, offering visual drama, history and unusual features. Here are a half-dozen of our favorites from the year.

January:

Seeming to jut out over the canyon was the 1959 Rodney Walker residence in Ojai. The architect relied heavily on triangular shapes in his design.

February:

A catwalk hallway caught our attention at 7270 Mulholland Drive. The Hollywood Hills West home has an industrial vibe and an indoor waterfall.

May:

This house of quartz creates drama in the landscape of the Palm Springs community of Southridge. The Midcentury Modern home used more than 700 tons of quartz.

July:

Another high-drama home was the Wolff House, designed by Modernist architect John Lautner. The nearly 10,000-square-foot home is built into a hillside above the Sunset Strip in Hollywood Hills West.

September:

Also making a splash was the Lautner-designed Stevens House in Malibu Colony. The wood-and-concrete structure draws inspiration for its curved shell from the shape of waves.

October:

A glass-enclosed bridge revealing canyon and reservoir views connects the upper level wings of this modern home in Bel-Air.

November:

Cantilevered rooms, glass walls and wooden beams give this Pacific Palisades retreat the feel of a treehouse. The 1974 Modernist home was designed by architect Ray Kappe.
