Palestinian student shot by Israeli troops, witnesses say

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- An Israeli soldier driving a civilian car shot and killed a 21-year-old Palestinian woman Wednesday near a refugee camp outside the West Bank city of Hebron, according to Palestinian witnesses and medical sources.

The Israeli military told media that soldiers fired after they came under attack.

Palestinian witnesses told reporters that two Israeli soldiers came out of the car, apparently after it was hit by stones, and opened fire in the direction of Palestinians standing at the entrance of a college near the camp.

Lubna Hanash, a college student, was hit in the head and was taken to Ahli Hospital in nearby Hebron, where she was declared dead, said a doctor in hospital’s emergency ward.

Two other people were reportedly slightly injured in the shooting.

Israeli media quoted an army spokesman as saying that “an initial investigation revealed that an army squad was ambushed by firebombs and rocks on Highway 60 near Arroub refugee camp and opened fire, fearing for their lives.”

Residents clashed with soldiers who arrived at the scene following the shooting, reports said. Video from the scene showed soldiers firing tear gas and stun grenades at people who had gathered nearby.

Also Wednesday, a 16-year-old Palestinian who was shot in the head during a clash last week died of his wounds at an Israeli hospital.

Salah Amarin had been in a coma after being shot Friday during confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers near Rachel Tomb, north of Bethlehem.
