Monotone Steven Wright brings his rapier-like one-liners to Las Vegas
Reporting from Las Vegas — Comedian Steven Wright delivers his absurd one-liners with a monotone voice and deadpan style when he returns to The Orleans Showroom on July 10 and 11.
The Academy Award winner and Grammy Award nominee, 59, kicked off his career at 23, when he was a regular performer at Ding Ho’s Comedy Club & Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge, Mass. His big break came with an appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson, where he was invited to return the following week for rare back-to-back appearance.
Wright’s new brand of comedy with that lackluster voice caught the comedy world’s attention, bringing him appearances on “Saturday Night Live” and “Late Night With David Letterman.”
He starred in two HBO specials: “A Steven Wright Special” and “Wicker Chairs and Gravity.” By 1985, Wright received a Grammy nomination for his debut album, “I Have a Pony” and his second came 22 years later for its sequel, “I Still Have a Pony.”
Following his second nomination, he was the first inductee into The Boston Comedy Hall of Fame.
The Oscar came in 1989, when Wright received an Academy Award for best short film for his satiric film, “The Appointments of Dennis Jennings,” which he co-starred in and wrote.
He has also appeared on the big and small screens in movies such as “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Half Baked” and “The Swan Princess.” In 2011, as the voice of Danny on an episode of the animated series, “Aqua Teen Hunger Force.” He also guest starred on the FX TV show “Louie.”
