Fashion designers touch up their brands with new makeup collections

Designer-branded beauty collections are big business. Ever since Coco Chanel debuted Rouge Coromandel lip color in 1920, designers have gone from the atelier to the makeup counter in search of the kind of profits that come from selling accessible luxury. In recent years, an increasing number have padded their portfolios with nail polish and lipstick, skin cream and eye shadow. Here's a look at some of the newer contenders.

The vibe: Unconventional "It" girl
Signatures: Sleek chrome packaging; Marc Jacobs logo
Star products: Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Lacquer; Magic Marc'er Precision Pen Eyeliner
Fall poster girl: Jessica Lange, 65, is a cool beauty who's racked up multiple Oscars, Emmys and other awards. In February, Jacobs told Women's Wear Daily that Lange and Meryl Streep "have a sort of strength without any aggressivity, and without it being a discussion about youth."
What's new: Twinkle Pop Eye Stick shadow pens, Kiss Pop Color Stick jumbo lip pencils and Smart Wand Tinted Face Stick concealers that "reimagine portable luxury," according to the company.

The vibe: Naughty by nature
Signatures: Sophisticated mahogany cases with gold trim, the TF logo

Fall poster girl: 19-year-old Malibu native Gigi Hadid, known for her beachy blond curls and curvaceous figure, had a rookie spot in Sports Illustrated's 2014 swimwear edition and posed nude for Tom Ford's Velvet Orchid fragrance ad. She is the daughter of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Yolanda Foster.
What's new: Traceless Complexion Collection of foundation and concealing pens; the fall color collection of monochromatic neutrals

The vibe: Regal Euro-glam
Signatures: The line, to debut in mid-October, will be identifiable by its gold web-stripe motif on compacts; the interlocking G logo; and a color palette — gold, black, red, ottanio (a blue green), bronze and copper — from the label's fashion collections.
Fall poster girl: Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco, a film producer and avid equestrian who happens to be the granddaughter of the late Princess Grace. The company describes Casiraghi, 28, as "sophisticated, successful and iconic."
What's new: The entire collection, which includes cosmetics for eyes, face, lips and nails, makeup brushes and skin-care products

Signatures: Tangerine cases and gold fretwork, the double-T logo, natural hues

Poster girl: The petite 48-year-old blond designer gives herself face time as star of the advertising campaign for her namesake fragrance, launched in conjunction with the beauty line, which she describes as "tomboy meets feminine."

Fall poster girl: Karmen Pedaru, 24, is a natural athlete who once played goalie for Estonia's national soccer team. Kors has described her look as "sporty, sexy chic."
