If you go: More info on European train travel

Buying Eurail passes can be complex, with dozens of options for countries, duration and more to choose from, but they’re still a good deal, especially considering the unfavorable euro-to-dollar exchange rate. We purchased first-class regional flexi-saver Eurail passes, which were good for four days of travel within two months and required us to travel together. They also entitled us to a discount on Eurostar and included passage on the Goethe. The passes, Eurostar tickets and multiple seat reservations cost $696 apiece. Passes and seat reservations can be made through a travel agent or with Rail Europe (www.raileurope.com, [800] 622-8600). If you or your agent book seat reservations on the website, it’s not possible to make specific requests — table for two, forward facing, window seat—but it may be possible by telephone, according to Rail Europe.
