Another thick white winter coat for Mammoth
As if in answer to some holiday wish, Mammoth Mountain is getting yet another storm, two weeks before Christmas visitors arrive. Forecasters are predicting as much as four feet of new snow by Monday.
“It’s not snowing, it’s dumping,” says Mammoth Lakes resident Cynthia Hayes, who reported six inches of new snow in town by late Thursday. “The conditions are fantastic. I have gone skiing more this year than in the previous two years combined.”
The first of a series of storms arrived about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. With four feet already in place at the summit and two at the base, the new storm system promises ideal conditions over the holiday break.
Two of Mammoth’s key hubs, Canyon and Eagle Lodge, open Saturday. Wind and weather permitting, 80 of the mountain’s 151 trails will be open. The snow is expected to continue Friday, take a break on Saturday, then pick up again Sunday and Monday.
Closer to L.A., the system was expected to drop snow at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, as well as Mountain High.
