Shaun White hosting Big Bear snowboarding qualifier this weekend
Olympic gold medalist Shaun White returns to his home court, Bear Mountain, on Saturday, to host and hand out awards at an open snowboard competition on the very mountain where he learned his breathtaking stunts.
The rail jam competition is open to the first 50 riders to sign up Saturday. The overall winner earns a chance to compete at Air + Style, March 3-4, in Expo Park at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
Riders under age 18 need a parent or guardian to fill out a liability waiver.
Blink-182’s Travis Barker will perform after the snowboarding events. Practice begins at 10 a.m., and the qualifier is at noon. The concert is expected to start around 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. Details here.
The Big Bear event comes in advance of a weather system about to hit the Sierra and San Bernardino mountains, after an arid start to the winter. Snow is forecast in Mammoth Lakes starting this weekend and extending into next week. The same system is expected to bring rain and snow to Big Bear starting Monday.

Meanwhile, the best American skiers and snowboarders will compete at Mammoth Mountain on Jan. 17-21 in half-pipe and slope-style qualifying events for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
