National park tips: At the Grand Canyon in winter, try these for traction
If you visit Grand Canyon National Park in winter, expect snow and ice on the south rim. And even if you’re only walking a mile or two down the trail, you’ll need traction.
If you haven’t got your own crampons, spend $20 for a pair (available in park stores) to help your hiking boots grip the icy ground.
In honor of this year’s National Park Service centennial, the Travel section is posting 100 park travel ideas and tips based on trips staff travel writer Christopher Reynolds has taken, along with photo-op advice from Times photographer Mark Boster. We’ll post one per day through Dec. 31.
