National park tips: Here’s the coziest old lodge you’ve never heard of

You’ll need to do some advance work to get a reservation, but Lassen Volcanic National Park’s underappreciated Drakesbad Guest Ranch, about 170 miles north of Sacramento, is a rare throwback that’s worth it.

It’s a summertime lodge and rustic cabins (set to open June 2, 2017), that go back to 1900. Neighbored by stables, the lodge runs much like a dude ranch, featuring a spring-fed pool. Lodge rooms, cabins and bungalows for two feature plenty of wood paneling and rely on kerosene lamps for light.

In 2016, rates were usually $147 to $177 per person per night, three daily meals included.
