New York’s famous Papaya King hot dogs come to Las Vegas
Las Vegas, it’s time to party like it’s 1932. That was the year one of New York’s most beloved hot dog stands opened, and now it has come to the Strip.
Papaya King recently opened at 4503 Paradise Road, right across Harmon Avenue from the Hard Rock Hotel. The Vegas location is the eatery’s first venture outside Brooklyn and Manhattan.
New Yorkers have been washing down the skinny frankfurters with frothy papaya drinks since the Great Depression. Papaya King claims celebrity fans such as Anthony Bourdain and Martha Stewart.
The late chef Julia Child once described Papaya King’s frank as “the best hot dog in New York.” In a review, New York magazine said “the main draw, the hickory-smoked hot dogs — a beef recipe seasoned with garlic, oregano, and other tasty spices — is difficult to forget.”
The bargain basement prices are a draw too.
In Vegas, a variety of specialty frankfurters cost just $4 each. The selection includes the Bullseye (with barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese sauce and an onion ring), the Green Hot (with jalapeno, roasted red pepper and raw onion) and the Upper East (with pastrami, sauerkraut and pickle chips).
Combo meals add a drink and curly fries to the dog.
Folks seeking a deep-fryer fix can feast on fried pickles, fried Oreos and fried Twinkies.
The restaurant offers dine-in and carryout. It is open daily 10 a.m. to 3 a.m.
