What makes this June Lake Winter Fest extra special? Snow and more snow
What if you held a winter festival and the weather gods filled the land with snow? That’s the fortunate and unfamiliar situation June Lake finds itself in this year. The June Lake Winter Festival is scheduled for Feb. 27, with base depths on the mountain at 3 feet or better.
The family friendly alpine town just north of Mammoth Lakes has received 138 inches since November, payback after several disappointing winters where there was barely enough slush to make a snow ball. This year, the various snow-sculpting competitions, the winter triathlon and other events will find playing fields with plenty of white stuff.
“June Lake is such an incredible place in the winter,” said one of the town’s leaders, Ralph Lockhart of the Double Eagle Resort & Spa. “We are grateful for the bounty of snow we’ve received this year. It really sets the scene for the winter festival and gives us a reason to celebrate.”
A winter triathlon will combine Nordic skiing, laser rifle shooting and a fat bike segment, Feb. 27, with prizes in a wide range of divisions. There will also be a snowmobile poker event, where contestants follow a course between June Lake and Mammoth Lakes with stations along the way to draw cards and assemble a poker hand. Awards for best and worst hands will be handed out at the finish.
Meanwhile, the family fun zone at the June Mountain ski resort serves up food, festivities, music, kids’ games and sledding. Children 12 and under ski and board for free.
