A host of stars appeared last week for the world premiere of “The Greatest Showman,” a film about circus impresario P.T. Barnum. The red carpet was aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, in New York Harbor.

The seaboard premiere was a first, according to Cunard. Barnum, who lived from 1810 to 1891, was a frequent Cunard traveler.

“The Greatest Showman” cast, including Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya walked the red carpet on board Cunard’s flagship ocean liner just before the film was shown in the ship‘s Illuminations theater.

The film opens in theaters Dec. 20.

It is an original musical that focuses on the ambition and imagination of Phineas Taylor Barnum, an American politician, showman and businessman credited with promoting hoaxes and founding Barnum & Bailey Circus.

“Showman” is directed by Michael Gracey, with songs by Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

During his life, Barnum sailed multiple times on various Cunard ships between New York and England.

Scenes from the movie were shot in the original U.S. headquarters of Cunard, an Italian Renaissance-style landmark in lower Manhattan. In addition, many scenes were shot in Brooklyn, the U.S. home port for Queen Mary 2.

Cunard and 20th Century Fox Film partnered to host the premiere on the ship.
