Oceania Cruises joins four other lines in offering free Wi-Fi
Cruise ships have spent the past two decades trying to figure out how to keep us connected to the internet while we’re at sea, with varying degrees of success.
Unfortunately, they often charge a fortune for the privilege of logging on, with rates reaching up to $99 a day. But a handful of ships are bucking this trend, offering passengers free Wi-Fi.
The latest line to announce it would stop charging guests when they log on is luxury line Oceania Cruises. It joins Crystal Cruises, Hurtegruten, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises in offering free internet plans. All are premium lines.
The Miami-based cruise line says it is introducing a new high-speed internet system called Wavenet throughout its six-ship fleet. Travelers should be able to upload and download large files, enjoy their favorite shows on Netflix, stream their playlists on Spotify, use social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, and livestream Facetime.
“Our guests and crew can continue to surf, post and stream aboard our ships from anywhere around the globe, just as they would at home,” President and CEO Bob Binder said in a statement.
Free, unlimited service will be included for all stateroom and suite categories on all sailings.
A streaming upgrade, Wavenet Prime, will be available for $9.99 per day for guests who wish to stream movies, music or videos. The service will be available on all vessels by the end of April.
