Disney Cruise Line will bring its special form of Wonder to San Diego again this year and in 2019, according to a recent company announcement.

In the process, it will help the Port of San Diego more firmly establish itself as a place where Southern California passengers can find cruises that will transport them to ports in Hawaii, the Mexican Riviera, South America and the Panama Canal.

San Diego’s cruise port, which is smaller than ports in Long Beach and Los Angeles, will welcome 96 cruise ship calls in 2018 to 2019, compared with 83 calls in 2017 to 2018. An estimated 280,000 passengers will set sail there.

Most sailings from San Diego, a seasonal cruise port, take place from September and through May.

Other than the Disney cruises, which occur in the spring, San Diego offers cruises on Holland America Cruise Line‘s Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam, which sail to the Mexican Riviera and Hawaiian Islands.

In addition, Holland America’s Volendam occasionally sails to South America and the Panama Canal.

“What we are seeing is Disney increasing calls over this season and Holland America Line offering newer and larger vessels in the San Diego market next season,” said Marguerite Elicone, a San Diego port spokeswoman. “Capacity in San Diego is increasing to meet the increasing demand.”

Disney’s Wonder departs San Diego from March to May sailing to Mexico; cruises range from two to seven days. Prices start at $1,184 per person for an inside cabin.

Most sailings call on Ensenada. Four- and five-night Baja cruises include a visit to Cabo San Lucas.

Seven-night sailings to the Mexican Riviera call on Cabo San Lucas and feature the snorkeling and scuba diving hot spots of Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán on the Mexican mainland.
