Las Vegas mourns death of Celine Dion’s husband, René Angélil; concerts canceled
Superstar singer Celine Dion has canceled her weekend concerts at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas after the death Thursday of her longtime husband, René Angélil.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that René Angélil, aged 73, died this [Thursday] morning at her residence in Las Vegas after a long and courageous fight against cancer,” “Team Celine” announced on the singer’s Facebook page.
“The family wishes to live the mourning in privacy. Other information you will be provided in the next few days.”
Dion has canceled performances for Saturday and Sunday; a news release said she would keep her next scheduled date to perform on Feb. 23. The statement added that fans already in Vegas for this weekend’s shows may receive refunds at the Colosseum box office.
Angélil was remembered Thursday evening with a larger-than-life tribute on the Caesars marquee. It stated, simply: “We will miss you friend.”
Angélil was Dion’s longtime manager until throat cancer forced him to step down.
“It is impossible to overstate the impact René and, of course, Celine have had on the history of entertainment in Las Vegas and at Caesars Palace, with his audacious vision regarding her residency, now 13 years and counting,” Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner said in a statement.
