Why is L.A. suddenly America’s most spontaneous city? This travel app tells all
Oh get a room! It sounds cliché, but L.A. visitors apparently take it to heart.
Los Angeles claims the brass ring as America’s most spontaneous city, according to Hotel Tonight, a mobile app that offers last-minute hotel bookings at cut-rate prices.
“L.A. was the runaway winner with both the highest percentage of same-day bookings and the most bookings made after 5 p.m. (41% of all same-day bookings),” the company said in a statement about its data rankings.
San Diego and San Francisco also ranked among the 10 most spontaneous cities in the U.S.
Among the types of hotels booked — Hotel Tonight describes them as basic, hip, solid and luxe — L.A. hotel seekers most often chose a hip hotel.
Thirty-percent of Boston’s last-minute bookers chose a luxury hotel, while 42% of Phoenix’s visitors selected a basic hotel.
Here are the 10 most spontaneous U.S. cities by Hotel Tonight’s data:
2. Phoenix
3. Washington, D.C.
4. Boston
6. Las Vegas
7. San Diego
9. Chicago
10. Miami
And, ugh, hard to believe in 2016 that the word “staycation” is still a thing.
Hotel Tonight looked at its most visited regions and compared how many bookings were made by customers with ZIP Codes less than 50 miles away from the selected hotel city.
Orange County wins the staycation crown, followed by New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Boston. Los Angeles placed seventh with the stay-close-to-home crowd.
