Deal: Fourth-graders ski free this season at Badger Pass in Yosemite

Chalk up another freebie for the Every Kid in a Park initiative. Badger Pass Ski Area in Yosemite National Park invites fourth-graders to ski or snowboard at the resort this season -- for free.

The deal: The Obama administration announced in September that fourth-graders would receive a pass for free entry to national parks through Aug. 31. Other offers came forth too, including fourth-graders going free on tours by Montana-based Austin Adventures.

Now Badger Pass steps up. Fourth-grade students will receive a free lift ticket and a 25% discount off rentals and lift tickets for their family members. You need to download and present the free Every Kid in a Park pass to get a lift ticket.

Daily tickets usually cost $48.50 for adults and $25 for children 7 to 12 years old (so you save $25).

Badger Pass plans to open Saturday, if there’s enough snow.

When: The offer is valid through Feb. 29. (2016 is a leap year.)

Details: Badger Pass, which opened in 1935, is good for families seeking not just downhill skiing and snowboarding but also snowshoeing, snow tubing and cross-country skiing. It has 10 runs with five chair lifts.

And why just fourth-graders? The Every Kid in a Park initiative says children 9 to 11 years old are at a developmental sweet spot in understanding the world around them.

“At this stage, they are receptive to new ideas and most likely to hold positive attitudes toward nature and the environment,” according to the website.
