Donovan Mitchell confirms he is second Jazz player to test positive for the coronavirus

Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for the coronavirus, the Utah Jazz All-Star confirmed Thursday on Instagram.

The NBA on Wednesday indefinitely suspended the 2019-20 season after Mitchell’s Utah teammate Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, while the team was in Oklahoma City to play the Thunder. The Jazz said in a statement Thursday morning that Oklahoma health officials tested every member of the team’s traveling party, with one additional positive outcome.

Multiple media reports earlier Thursday indicated that the positive test belonged to Mitchell.

“Thanks to everyone who has been reaching out since hearing the news about my positive test,” Mitchell wrote. “We are all learning more about the seriousness of this situation and hopefully people can continue to educate themselves and realize that they need to behave responsibly both for their own health and for the well being of those around them.”

In the last week, the Jazz hosted Toronto and played at Detroit, Boston and New York.

Mitchell’s father is being tested for the coronavirus as a precautionary measure, the New York Mets said Thursday. Donovan Mitchell Sr. is the the Mets’ director of player relations and community engagement.
