Women’s World Cup final sets TV record; U.S. team to attend rally Tuesday in L.A.
The United States’ 5-2 blowout of Japan in Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final drew an average of 25.4 million viewers, according to Fox, the largest audience ever to watch a soccer game on a single U.S. network.
The most-watched match in U.S. history is the 2014 men’s World Cup final between Germany and Argentina, which drew 26.5 million viewers. However, that audience was split between ABC and the Spanish-language Univision network.
Coming off their victory in Vancouver, Canada, the newly minted champions will travel to Los Angeles for their first public appearance since winning the title, headlining a fan rally scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at L.A. Live.
The team gathered Monday morning at Fox’s temporary studios along Vancouver’s waterfront, and just to show there were no hard feelings from Sunday’s game, Japanese captain Aya Miyama showed up with a bag of candy for the U.S. players.
“Make sure they get it,” she said after handing it over to a U.S. Soccer official.
