A Super Bowl for the 49ers’ future Santa Clara home?
The San Francisco 49ers’ future home in Santa Clara will be an upgrade for the Bay Area team -- heck, it’s already a Super Bowl contender.
At the NFL’s fall meeting in Chicago on Tuesday, team owners selected South Florida and San Francisco as finalists to host Super Bowl L in 2016. The owners are expected to make the final choice in May.
If San Francisco isn’t named the 2016 host, it still has another shot at the big game.
The city not selected to host the 2016 game will compete against Houston, which was selected as a finalist to host the 2017 game.
The 49ers’ new $1.2-billion stadium in Santa Clara is under construction and is expected to be ready for the 2014 season.
This year, the Super Bowl is to be held in New Orleans (XLVII) followed by East Rutherford, N.J. (XLVIII) and Glendale, Ariz. (XLIX).
