Philadelphia Eagles’ Riley Cooper has solid practice after return

Riley Cooper made a splash upon his return to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.

The controversial receiver, who came back to practice after a video of him using a racial slur had surfaced, caught three long passes for touchdowns.

Cooper, who has apologized publicly and to his teammates for the video that went viral last week, declined to elaborate on what type of professional help he received during his four-day hiatus from training camp. Eagles Coach Chip Kelly also declined.

“That’s Riley’s personal thing,” Kelly said. “And again, I know you have to ask the question, and I understand that, but that’s not at liberty for me to say that. In deference to him, that’s Riley’s situation. I wouldn’t comment on anybody in any situation if they sought outside assistance and they were excused in terms of where they would go.”

The Eagles have fined Cooper an undisclosed amount, but Kelly said he never considered suspending him.

Asked about Cooper’s decision to return Tuesday, Kelly said: “My concern wasn’t how he practiced, it’s just him with the team itself and get the chance to make sure he got to talk to every single guy so that they understand how we felt, what he did, and understand that he’s truly sorry for what he did. We’ll look at the film and correct all those other things, but that wasn’t my concern.”
