Report: Daniel Snyder, Roger Goodell to discuss Redskins name Tuesday
Before the NFL’s scheduled meeting with a Native American group later this week, Commissioner Roger Goodell plans to meet with Washington team owner Daniel Snyder to discuss the Redskins nickname, the Washington Post is reporting.
A person familiar with the situation told the Post that the scheduled get-together between the two men does not mean Snyder has switched his stance on the Redskins nickname, which the owner has refused to change despite pressure from groups that find the term offensive.
Instead, the person said, the meeting between Snyder and Goodell “is to get more of an understanding from the club as to how it plans to address the issue.”
The Redskins have yet to comment on the reported meeting.
Earlier this year, Snyder took a defiant stand on the topic, telling USA Today Sports he would never change the name and “you can put that in all caps.” He has since toned it down considerably, although he still has indicated he has no intention of budging on the matter.
Last week, person some have said to be an associate of Snyder’s registered the trademark to the name Washington Bravehearts. The Redskins have denied having anything to do with the move or that Snyder even knows Aris Mardirossian, the man who now has the rights to that name.
