Celtics to trade All-Star Rajon Rondo to Dallas Mavericks, reports say

The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks have finalized a trade that will send All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo to the Western Conference, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Rondo, who has spent his entire eight-year career in Boston and helped the Celtics win the NBA title in 2008, will be shipped to the Mavericks in exchange for forwards Brandan Wright and Jae Crowder, point guard Jameer Nelson, and future first and second round picks, according to ESPN.

Joining a Mavericks lineup that already includes Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis, Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons, Rondo will be given the keys to an offense already presenting itself as a major threat in the NBA’s stacked Western Conference.

The move also allows the Mavericks to solidify their starting point-guard position. The team unloaded point guard Jose Calderon in a summer deal with the New York Knicks that brought Chandler, the Mavericks’ defensive anchor, back to Dallas.

Chandler and Nowitzki were part of the Mavericks squad that bested LeBron James’ Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals.

The Mavericks are currently 19-8, good for sixth in the West. The Golden State Warriors, fresh off a 16-game winning streak, sit atop the standings after one quarter of the season.

The Celtics have not made the NBA playoffs since 2012, and are stumbling through a rebuilding process that started when Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce left the team two years ago. The Celtics used a first-round draft pick on Oklahoma State standout Marcus Smart this summer, who now figures to replace Rondo as the team’s starting point guard.
