Condition of F1 champ Michael Schumacher remains publicly guarded

One month after Michael Schumacher suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident, the condition of the legendary Formula One driver remained publicly guarded Wednesday.

Doctors treating Schumacher at Grenoble University Hospital in France, where he remained in a medically induced coma, have not commented on his status since early this month.

Two weeks ago Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, described the driver’s condition as “stable” but did not elaborate.

And Wednesday, Kehm reportedly discounted a story in the French newspaper L’Equipe that doctors were prepared to gradually awaken Schumacher from his coma.

“I am stressing again that any statement regarding Michael’s health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be considered as speculation,” Kehm said in a statement, according to Britain’s Sky.com.

“I repeat that we will not comment on speculations,” Kehm said.

Schumacher, 45, was injured Dec. 29 while skiing in the French Alpine resort of Meribel. He hit his head on a rock and, despite wearing a helmet, suffered head injuries that required two surgeries.

The German driver, who retired a second time after the 2012 season, won a record seven Formula One championships and holds the career record for series wins with 91.
