Denver Broncos set NFL single-season points record

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos needed only 18 points on Sunday to break the NFL single-season points record.

They got it done in the first half against an Oakland Raiders defense that had been giving up only 20.5 points a game.

The New England Patriots held the record with 589 points in 2007. When Manning connected with Demaryius Thomas on a 63-yard touchdown play in the second quarter, the Broncos had eclipsed the mark by four points in extending their lead to 21-0 over Oakland. Denver eventually built a 31-0 lead by halftime.

Manning, who eclipsed Brady’s single-season touchdown passing mark of 50 last week and is up to 55 with four more by halftime Sunday, set the single-season passing yardage record in the second quarter on a five-yard scoring pass to Thomas. He eclipsed the mark of 5,476 yards set in 2011 by Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.
